The ReCYCLEry

Welcome to the online home of the ReCYCLEry

The ReCYCLEry thrives solely through the voluntary effort of several determined individuals and assistance of the community at large. With the assistance of SURGE, we initiated and maintain the Blue Urban Bikes program and we welcome any and all volunteers, bike mechanics or not, to fulfill our mission, and now that fuel prices are at unexpected heights, demand is growing quickly. Please attend our workshops or contact us if you wish to contribute.

Located in Carrboro, NC, The ReCYCLEry is a direct-service not-for-profit organization whose mission is to encourage the use of the bicycle as a mode of transportation and recreation. This mission is accomplished through:

(1) hands-on skill building where we teach people how to repair and maintain bicycles;
(2) salvaging bicycles ensuring that anyone who needs a bicycle can earn one;
(3) outreach to underserved communities with these services.

"RALEIGH, N.C. — Every year, there are more than 900 crashes between motorists and bicycle riders in North Carolina. Most are thought to be accidental; however, a Raleigh cyclist said the driver that hit her over the weekend did it intentionally...."

"McKeithan said she was pedaling along Old US 1 in Chatham County Saturday afternoon when a car struck her. She suffered cuts and bruises to her arms, shoulders and legs...."

"McKeithan also said she believes the car the hit her was a charcoal-gray Chrysler 300M with a license plate that began with the letters 'X Y T.'"

Award Winning BUB is up! ...not to mention gas prices

It's time to give a 2008 summer update on the Blue Urban Bikes project, our own innovative bike loan effort, brought to fruition by the volunteer efforts of the ReCYCLEry and SURGE. Awards and BUB Hub updates are here.

We can now officially call the program, the "award winning" Blue Urban Bikes. At the "Annual Kick Gas Celebration" held today at Research Triangle Park Headquarters, the Blue Urban Bikes Program was awarded the Go Chapel Hill Community Cycling Award and a shiny new plaque for which we need to find a humble, yet prominent placement.

The luncheon and awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of this year's transportation demand management (TDM) programs, including the Durham County Trip Reduction Ordinance and TDM Programs in RTP, Durham, Orange and Wake Counties. Other recognitions included this year's statistics for the Smart Commute Challenge and recognition of the accomplishments of the region's Best Workplaces for Commuters.

Vandals Destroying, Stealing Community Group's Property

CARRBORO, N.C. - Vandals are targeting people trying to do something good in Carrboro.

Organizers of a community bike repair workshop called the Recyclery say they want to find out who's been wrecking their site.

Chris Richmond, director of the Recyclery , said that he doesn't want the vandals punished; he wants to meet them, and include them in the Recyclery community.

Ideally, he'd even invite them to do a mural on the side of the building.

"We could use their help painting a building rather than just randomly tagging," said Richmond.

He and a handful of volunteers oversee a mini mountain of bicycle parts, and use it to help people learn all about bike maintenance.

"Our basic idea is that if a bike is in better working order, it's going to be ridden more often," said director Chris Richmond.

Help out long enough, and folks can even build a bike of your own to keep.

Triangle Transit and Bikes on Buses

Bikes on Buses Answers From Triangle Transit

Greetings-

Back in March, this list had a short discussion on Triangle Transit's
policy on bring bikes onboard buses. Sean had a few questions I
could not answer directly, and I said I would do research and return to
the list with an answer. Below are Sean's questions, followed by my
answers.

***********

Patrick -How is it that a bike that is tied down to one of the
wheelchair positions can become a projectile? and, Have you tested the
3-bike rack on the new buses? Why do other municipalities allow bikes on
the bus? I would really like to know the answers to these questions,
because the lack of capacity for bikes is what caused me to stop using
the transit system.- Sean

ReCYCLEry Parking Announcement

It is naturally our wish that our guests bicycle to and from the ReCYCLEry, though it is to be expected a fair amount of automobile traffic is inevitable.

As our numbers increase, our current parking situation has become untenable and we request that in the future that nobody park on Daffodil Lane immediately outside of the ReCYCLEry gates. It creates a travel hazard for the residents up the hill and around the curve, not to mention all of our friends and participants.

Therefore we now request that those who must drive please park across South Greensboro Street from the lower end of Old Pittsboro Road. There is a vacant lot in front of the former factory. More details will follow in a future post and on our contact/directions page.

Thanks for your understanding and thanks for making the ReCYCLEry a better place!

Blue Bikes Rolling

The ReCYCLEry, Carrboro’s nonprofit community bike workshop, is working to bring more bicycles to Carrboro roads. By expanding their bike loan program, called Blue Urban Bikes, or BUB, they hope to get people pushing bike pedals instead of gas pedals.

The Blue Urban Bikes program is the ReCYCLEry’s biggest push to promote bikes on Carrboro and Chapel Hill roads. For the annual price of ten dollars or two hours of volunteer work, anyone can become a BUB member and borrow the refurbished blue bikes for a day at a time, complete with two cargo baskets, lights, a lock and a helmet.

A Community Bicycle Loan Program

Blue Urban Bikes (BUB), a community bicycle loan program, is designed to provide a reliable source of clean, affordable and sustainable transportation. Our community is ideal for getting around on a bicycle -- when you think about the time it often takes to find a parking space, riding a bike simply takes less time and leaves you feeling strong, able and healthy. The BUB Fleet offers a transportation alternative to citizens so that they may play an active role in lessening the environmental footprint of our community. Nobody suspected in 2006 that gas prices would rise over four dollars per gallon, but now in 2008, the BUB program can also claim to help its users' budgets!
