The ReCYCLEry

A New Website to go with the new ReCYCLEry home!

Our website updates have been sorely lacking this year during our temporary move in May, our transition to an almost entirely new Board of Directors in the Fall, the holidays and finally our upcoming move into a fairly permanent location.

Rich Giorgi, one of our new executive board members, has provided a great new ReCYCLEry Twitter account for regular updates, and we're still posting on our Facebook group. We are well on our way with our new website now, and will be keeping in touch here to keep everyone posted on our new updates while we finalize the digital 2.0 rebuild.

The new website will be much more interactive and include discussion boards for anyone to post questions and answers and suggestions, not to mention news on local and national biking events. All of our content will be easily indexed and we will revive our photo gallery and provide embedded videos of the ReCYCLEry from the past several years.

The ReCYCLEry Has To Move

The ReCYCLEry organization is working hard with the Town of Carrboro to find a new place to continue their operations that reconnects salvaged bicycles with the surrounding community.

Richard [Giorgi], a founder of the ReCYCLEry, says the organization has until the end of the year to find a new place suitable for everything it has to offer.

The ReCYCLEry is a non-profit organization in downtown Carrboro that specializes in providing salvaged bicycles to residents for both transportation and recreational purposes. The building it currently operates out of is part of the 300 East Main Street development in Carrboro that is scheduled to be torn down for further developments.

Rich Giorgi helps fix a bicycle wheel at the CarrboroReCYCLEry on Nov. 8.

With hundreds of old bicycles lying in the yard at 103 Padgette Lane, the ReCYCLEry looks like a junkyard, but as soon as the Sunday afternoon crowd starts to trickle in at noon it turns into something more like Dr. Frankenbike’s laboratory.

The idea behind the ReCYCLEry, which began in 2000, is to put as many bicycles on the road as possible, trading participant volunteer hours for time the ReCYCLEry’s mechanics and other volunteers put into helping the participant build a bicycle.

Even people who have no experience working with bicycles can go to get help from experienced mechanics and volunteers to build a bicycle.

The ReCYCLEry is currently located in Carrboro near Cat’s Cradle, but will have to change locations at the end of the year. It is currently on property given to it by the town of Carrboro.

ReCYCLEry in transition

Recently, the ReCYCLEry has reached a point of critical mass thanks to our great community. Despite or because of high gas prices, tough economic times and hope in politics, we have made great strides through adversity.

Looking back to 2008, we have made a stand with Blue Urban Bike expansion, Triangle Kick Gas Awards, Mobile Repair Days, Bike Karma, a Carrboro Music Festival presence, our 8th Anniversary Celebration, a new partnership with the Abundance Foundation and a BIG move to our current temporary location from which we must move at the end of the year. There was even more, and a good bit of press to help document our growth.

Triangle nonprofit gets old bikes rolling again

Original article and broadcast by the local CBS affiliate, WRAL News, 7/21/08

The ReCYCLEry was featured recently on WRAL Channel 5 News and we've already been receiving emails from folks interested in donating bicycles in the Raleigh area. At the current time, we don't have an established drop-off spot besides from our Carrboro location, but we are looking into some possible partnerships. A Durham/Chapel Hill location would be most likely.

However, there is an easy solution! There are a couple of other organizations in the area who have similar missions, and we like to support all such pro-active community organizations:

Award Winning BUB is up! ...not to mention gas prices

It's time to give a 2008 summer update on the Blue Urban Bikes project, our own innovative bike loan effort, brought to fruition by the volunteer efforts of the ReCYCLEry and SURGE. Awards and BUB Hub updates are here.

We can now officially call the program, the "award winning" Blue Urban Bikes. At the "Annual Kick Gas Celebration" held today at Research Triangle Park Headquarters, the Blue Urban Bikes Program was awarded the Go Chapel Hill Community Cycling Award and a shiny new plaque for which we need to find a humble, yet prominent placement.

The luncheon and awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of this year's transportation demand management (TDM) programs, including the Durham County Trip Reduction Ordinance and TDM Programs in RTP, Durham, Orange and Wake Counties. Other recognitions included this year's statistics for the Smart Commute Challenge and recognition of the accomplishments of the region's Best Workplaces for Commuters.

A Community Bicycle Loan Program

Blue Urban Bikes (BUB), a community bicycle loan program, is designed to provide a reliable source of healthy, convenient and sustainable transportation. Our community is ideal for getting around on a bicycle -- riding a bike simply takes less time than driving through traffic and looking for parking (especially on game day), and then it leaves you feeling strong, able and healthy. Nobody suspected in 2006 that gas prices would rise over four dollars per gallon and the economy would crash in 2008 and 2009; however, we always knew that the BUB fleet would provide a great transportation alternative that is not only affordable but also lessens our environmental footprint.

Welcome to the online home of the ReCYCLEry

The ReCYCLEry thrives solely through the voluntary effort of giving, determined individuals and our community at large. We initiated and maintain the Blue Urban Bikes program and we welcome any and all volunteers, bike mechanics or not, to fulfill our mission, and now that fuel prices and the economy at large is totally unpredictable if not in dire straits, demand is growing quickly. Please attend our workshops or contact us if you wish to contribute.

Located in Carrboro, NC, The ReCYCLEry is a not-for-profit organization that provides a creative workspace to connect salvaged bikes with active community members, creates opportunities for skill building and volunteerism, and seeks to increase the use of the bicycle for both transportation and recreation.
